Increase your impact by developing your team with this simple approach.
Almost every leader I know wants to have more impact and achieve higher levels of career success.
Here’s one way.
Invest more of your time in developing your team.
Why?
Over time, you will earn a return on your investment.
· Your team will perform better and achieve stronger results
· The quantity and quality of work you’re able to delegate will increase
· You will have more time for big-picture, strategic thinking
· You’ll build a legacy as the teammates you develop make career moves
· You’ll attract top talent who want to work with you
Most leaders get this concept, but don’t have a specific discipline for implementing it.
Here’s one simple way:
Step 1: Have regular development conversations with your teammates.
Start (or continue) having dialogue with your teammates about their ongoing development and career growth. Choose a frequency (e.g., weekly, monthly, or quarterly), and stick with it.
Step 2: Commit to doing something every day to develop your team.
Take at least one action each day, Monday-Friday, to develop your teammates. Plan your weekly actions in advance, keep track, and hold yourself accountable.
Step 3: Use the right development approach to fit each leader’s situation.
Different development strategies, feedback, coaching, mentoring, resources, and real-world experience are ideal in each situation. Leverage each of these at the right time to best support your team’s development.
I’ve put together a brief guide, Five Strategies to Develop Your Team Over the Next 90 Days, to help you build an approach that works.
